Geocache Description:

Another wonderful collection of old buildings that would provide a great photo opportunity for those so inclined.

Remember though: Take nothing but photographs; leave nothing but footprints!

Background.

Surrounded by dry-stone walls built by early settlers, the historic town of Sedan is home to many 19th century buildings that are in excellent condition. Sedan was settled in the 1850s by German settlers who were fleeing religious persecution.

I love this particular old ruin and the sense of history it can invoke if your imagination can break the boundaries of time and envisage the past lives of the occupants. This was once somebody’s home, and it features a purpose-built baker’s oven as part of the kitchen cooking area.

The main walls around the chimneys are local stone and render. The remaining walls are constructed using a style known as ‘pug and pine’. The rooms are made of a mixture of clay, cut straw, fresh manure and water packed between the native cypress pine posts. All still wonderfully preserved.

If you take the time to admire the construction and appreciate the work involved, I’m sure you’ll walk away with at least a small sense of awe at our pioneers. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Enjoy.

The Cache.

You are looking for a long, round container. It’s on the public side of the fence. Please check that the container is sealed tight before you return it.

There is a non-trackable, personalised coin in there for the FTF prize.
