Wilderness is the land that was - wild land beyond the
frontier…land that shaped the growth of our nation and the
character of its people. Wilderness is the land that is - rare,
wild places where one can retreat from civilization, reconnect with
the Earth, and find healing, meaning and significance.
The Gila Wilderness was designated the world's first Wilderness
area on June 3, 1924 and has been entertaining backpackers, hikers
and explorers ever since. The hike to this cache will take you
along one of the most well traveled trails in the wilderness and
will eventually lead you to the highest point in Catron County and
the entire 558,014 acre wilderness area. The views are somewhat
obstructed by the dense tree cover, but every once in a while
you'll pop out into the open and experience the grandeur of a place
that Aldo Leopold once roamed freely with the Mexican Lobo.
The final cache location is at N 33 AB.CDE and W 108 FG.HIJ
At waypoint #1 you will find a sign:
A and B = The third numeral on the sign
At waypoint #2 you will find a sign:
E and J = The third numeral on the sign
At waypoint #3 you should be positioned between two different
signs. If you have just hiked in from Sandy Point and are on the
trail consider the sign on your left to be Sign X and the sign on
your right to be Sign Y:
F = The first number on Sign X
G = The last number on Sign Y minus 4
H = The first number on Sign Y
At waypoint #4 you will be on the summit of Whitewater Baldy and
you should have a pretty good view. You should also see a very
large cairn (100+ rocks). Take a rough measurement from that cairn
to the tree shown in the picture below:
If the distance between the cairn and the tree is less than 5 feet
than both D and I = 9
If the distance between the cairn and the tree is greater than 6
feet and less than 15 feet than both D and I = 1
If the distance between the cairn and the tree is greater than 16
feet and less than 25 feet than both D and I = 3
If the distance between the cairn and the tree is greater than 26
feet and less than 40 feet than both D and I = 7
If the distance between the cairn and the tree is greater than 40
feet than both D and I = 5
And just because I'm feeling generous I'll give you C... C=3
