Geocache Description:

Sarakina gorge

Sarakina gorge

The wonderful gorge of Sarakina or Sarantapichos as called from the locals, with plenty of vegetation is near the village Mythi at the south of Crete.
The village of Mythi is located 20km east of Ierapetra on the road to Mirtos, and 56 km away from Agios Nikolaos, at an altitude of 220 m. and has 303 permanent residents. Within a short distance from the village starts the gorge.
In the myth Sarantapichos (giant, son of Zeus) through the mountain look to drink water from the canal. His long beard cat the mountain in two and created the canyon. The canyon is rich in vegetation, birds and gurgling water.
It is a gorge where you can walk with a little running water, ponds and climb. It is ideal for a pleasant afternoon or for a walk even with your children. Passage through the gorge will take approximately one hour.
Unfortunatly, when we visited the gorge this year, the water was only a bit and just a few small bowls left to remind us how it was 2-3 years ago.
The Cache
The cache is at the exit of the gorge. To find it you have to cross all the canyon from the parkin area that is at N35° 02.870, E25° 34.749 and on your route you will find the answers of the 2 questions bellow.
1st Question.
How many times the arrows showing the path led you to get under huge rocks;;; This is the number A
2nd Question.
At the begining of your path in the gorge you have to climp up some rocks, after that you arrive in the most narrow point of the canyon that is flat like a river. You are at the point N35° 03.121, E25° 34.492. (The gps signal is very pure!!!) At the end of this flat area of the canyon you have to climp a big rock with engraved steps on it. How many steps are engraved? You can see this rock in the Rock-Spoiler photos.
This is the number B
When you arrive at the exit of the gorge make this calculations to find the cache.
North = N35° 0A.(19*B)+1-A
East = E025° 34.83*B
Have Fun and enjoy this nice place!!
