Tales of The Traveler (1) : Isla Fernandina Traditional Cache

The deck heeled beneath my feet at an alarming angle. I had never been at sea with this kind rolling and heaving. The mighty ocean was putting me through more than I could bear. It has been nearly four months since I was in the sands of Egypt.

Normally when I traveled the sea I would travel as a passenger. However, this time I was hired as crew. I had come aboard, took a position before the mast and was rated a landsman. This, however, put me in an awkward position as I attempted to speak with the midshipman and the master of the vessel.

I eventually befriended a rated midshipman whom taught me what I needed to know. Beneath the sands I had found a set of numbers written on a stone tablet. With the stone tablet being far to heavy to carry, I wrote the numbers down exactly as I saw them and continued on my way. I recognized the numbers as a set of coordinates. My reason for boarding this vessel was to learn how to find these coordinates from those who knew navigation.

It is called a sextant. A contraption used to determine ones exact location upon the earth through a series of tabulations and mathematical equations. This vessel also had one other intrigue for me. Its destination.

We are headed for the great island home of the largest terrestrial lizard known to exist. Legend has it that the eggs of this lizard are worth a good deal of gold and although the very thought of being wealthy piqued the strings of my heart; the treasure I seek holds far more worth than all the eggs that could be harvested off this island.

Weeks have passed and my familiarity with the sextant is becoming more and more skilled. I proudly can chart my exact position of where we soon drop anchor. At approximately south zero minutes by thirty-six seconds by thirty-five minutes south and west ninety-one degrees by eighteen minutes by forty-six seconds is our current position. Looking across the islands and behold white washed stones, green trees and huge volcanic peaks belching small puffs of sulfurous gas into the sky. However the island that I am interested is behind us. Its stone crags and white sands are blinding to the very sight. Across its surface the small shapes of lizards and birds can be seen and in the dead middle is the gigantic crater of a huge volcano. At a distance of nearly five miles I can feel the heat is radiating from the surface.

Once all of the ships stores are set and all the decks are scrubbed the captain gives each of us 1 day of shore leave. A small company of men, I among them, cram into a jolly boat and head across the bay towards Isla Isabella. Once upon the beach I watch as the men slowly vanish into the island forest. I was left to guard the boat.

As the last man slips into the thick brush I launch the boat back into the water and very cautiously, to avoid being spotted by the watch from the ship, paddled my way across the tiny channel and towards Isla Fernandina. Upon that craggy shore, amongst the feet of the great volcano, between crag and bush was located another piece to this elusive puzzle.
