Geocache Description:

The Bog with the Plastic Boardwalk

Ferd’s Bog is a great spot to bird watch and enjoy the scenic beauty of an Adirondack bog without getting your feet wet. A short .3 mile hike will take you through the forest to the unique floating plastic boardwalk.

The trailhead and parking is located on Uncas Rd. off RT. 28 in Eagle Bay. Drive 4.9 miles down Uncas, look for the sign-in box on the left side of the road @
N43 47.116 W74 45.019

The New Cache container as of 10/2/10 is a small Lock & Lock hidden in the area just before the boardwalk begins. It should not be too difficult to find.
Please use stealth if needed and replace as found.

A little history;
The name "Ferd's Bog" has an interesting origin. There was man named Ferdinand LaFrance who was a hunter and a birder. He lived in Pompey, NY, south of Syracuse. Ferd and his brother had a hunting camp on Uncas Road, just across the Hamilton County line from Eagle Bay, NY. ( Ferd passed away a few years ago.) While hiking around on hunting expeditions in the late 1970s, Ferd "discovered" the bog and its boreal birds. He reported to a birders group Syracuse and subsequently took groups of them in there. They began to call it "The bog up near Ferd's camp" which eventually evolved to "Ferd's Bog." Since there was no official name on the topo map, it has been known, by birders at least, by that name for more than 25 years.

After returning to the parking area, you may want to consider continuing driving down Uncas Rd. It's a nice ride through the forest that will take you to the village of Raquette Lake.

Have Fun!!
