hamquilter: Much as I hate to, I think it's time to kiss this one good-bye. Went to check on it and it appears the host is missing again. Thanks to all to enjoyed this hide and its extra-large North Carolina pine cone.

Geocache Description:

Congratulations to Sharnie on the FTF

Mitch Park is a 280-acre park on Covell Road between Kelly and Santa Fe. It contains something for everyone:

** picnic pavilions
** 5 miles of paved trails
** softball and soccer fields
** volleyball and basketball courts
** skate park
** water to view and fish
** fascinating disc golf course
** amphitheater
** playgrounds
** Multi Activity Center (MAC), housing the Senior Citizen
Center and the Parks and Recreation Department

The park is named for John Lewis Mitch. Orphaned at 8 years, he joined the Army at the age of 13 and fought in the Civil War. He arrived in Edmond in August of 1889 and was instrumental in developing the new community. He promoted beautification of the town and the establishment of parks.

He was mayor from 1890 to 1891 and was responsible for the planting of 1000 trees on the campus of the territorial Normal School (now UCO). He was given the name "Father of the Normal School."

Mitch Park was developed and named for him in 1994.

Park closes at dusk.
