Geocache Description:

A short distance along a track takes you to the windmill, however unless the windmill is open, the entrance gate will be locked and access is via a style to the right hand side of the gate. Please note this will be very difficult to retrieve when the windmill is open due to the ever present muggles however its a very lonely place the rest of the time. Make sure it is well hidden after your visit.

A white-painted open trestle post mill, Chillenden windmill is one of the last of this type to be built in the county. Built in 1868-9, it replaced an earlier post mill on the same site, a site where mills have stood for around 500 years. This a well-known landmark in this rural area of the county stands on high exposed grounds in fields north of Chillenden just 4km SW of Sandwich with views to Knowlton Court to the east and Ramsgate to the north. The mill ceased regular work in 1949. It was preserved in the 1950s and, although restored several times, it collapsed in a gale in November, 2003. Fortunately it was reconstructed in 2005. The Chillenden windmill is much loved and features as one of the 4 local landmarks on the Deal and District Scout Badge.
It is open to the public for the summer season, every Sunday from early May 2009 from 2.30 to 4.30pm until the end of August. Entrance costs £1 for adults and children are free. For those with more time, there is a circular walk taking in Chillenden, Rowling and Goodnestone. Failing that pause for a few moments and take in the view. Limited parking is available on the track leading up to the windmill.

Kent Windmill Series: In total there are 72 windmills surviving in Kent. In East Kent there are 13 working windmills located at : Chillenden, Dover, Faversham, Herne, Hythe, Margate, Mersham, Sandwich, Sarre, Stelling Minnis, Willesborough, Wittersham, Woodchurch. I have searched to cache database extensively and think that I have found 6 other Windmill caches in Kent which have been bookmarked. Hence the first with the series title starts at #7.

If anybody would like to expand this series, please feel free to do so. All I would ask is that you let The Eastry Cache Bandits know so that they can inform you of the next number in the series to avoid duplication, and include a variation of this sentence in your cache description.

Congratulations to Kentish Hops for their 1st FTF - just pipped a couple of regulars to the post this time
