A hunting lodge was built
here in the early 1900's. It was built by Charlie Fitch as a
destination for hunters from Louisville and the surrounding
area. The lodge was also a social club and was
referred to as the hunt club. Mr Fitch built at least 6 frame
houses in the area around the lodge that could be rented out to
guests. Back when the lodge was built Bearcamp road was
gravel as were many roads in Jefferson county. I'm sure it
was an interesting journey to get back here from downtown
Louisville. |
The lodge was a large story and 1/2
high frame structure. The lower level was partially recessed
in the ground. A wide set of wooden steps on the buildings
front led to the second floor. The outside of the building at
this level had a screened wooden porch that extended across the
front and right side of the building. The large porch could
of held a lot of rocking chairs.
The lodge eventually became the residence for Mr. Fitch and he
rented the other houses to families and eventually sold them
off. Later on the lodge became the residence of the
Charlie Stewart family. Charlie was an official for the
highway department so Bearcamp road was well taken care of during
those days. |

After Charlie's death the
lodge and surrounding land was sold to the county in the early
1980's to become part of the JMF. It was later razed and all
that remains now of the old hunt club is some brick and concrete
foundation rubble. At one time Bearcamp road curved around to
the right of the lodge to avoid it, but now it just appears to
curve for no reason at all. |

The cache is a small lock & lock located near remnants of
the Bearcamp Hunt Lodge. Remember to bring a writing
instrument to sign the log.
For those who attended the Italian Inky event you may recognize
this container that I won as a door prize given by Jeepstaff &
KB. Thanks for the cache and I hope you enjoy finding this
one Jeepstaff.
