Just another boat launch or is it?
Another Westbrook Boat Launch
By my count there are four hand carry boat launches in Westbrook which allow you to access different parts of the Presumpscot River. Each one provides a different perspective of the Presumpscot and are equally great paddles. Okay, one of the launches is technically in Portland but close enough to the line to throw a coin.
All of the launches are open only from dawn to dusk. The four boat launches are at the following locations:
The first boat launch is this cache. It was built by Sappi after negotiation with the State. It is little more than a gravel turnout where you can park and put your canoe/kayak into the river. Like launch number two you can paddle all the way to Mallison Falls Dam in Windham. Do not try to paddle from this spot over the Saccarappa Falls. It is extremely dangerous. You can access this launch by turning off of Main Street on to Mill Lane/Street (no sign) just before the Village Dry Cleaning. The launch is about 500 feet up the road on the right. The cache is a magnetic micro with log and pencil. Sorry no FTF prize in this one.
The second boat launch is at the Cornelia Warren Four Seasons Rink off of Lincoln Street. This launch will allow you to paddle upstream all the way to the Mallison Falls Dam in Windham. It is a beautiful stretch of river. Paddling is against the current but is not difficult when the river is at normal levels. It takes about 5 hours to paddle round trip from the boat ramp to Mallison Falls and back. N 43 40.877 W 070 22.283.
The third boat launch is at the end of Foster Street off of Main Street near the Post Office. This launch will allow you to kayak/canoe the Presumpscot between Saccarappa Falls and the Cumberland Mills Dam at Sappi. It is less than a mile between the two. You can paddle this section in less than one hour. If you drive to the end of Foster Street there is a circle next to the ball field where you can stop and unload your canoe/kayak. The launch is to the right at the following coordinates: N 43 40.717 W 070 21.722. You will want to park behind the Post Office a short distance away. Do not park behind Presumpscot Commons as those spaces are reserved for residents.
The fourth boat launch is off 302 across from the Riverton Trolley Park. Waste Management has put in a parking area and it is a short carry down to the boat launch. From this launch you can paddle all the way out to Casco Bay with a short portage around the falls in Falmouth. The portage is well marked with a decent trail. The launch is located at N 43 42.182 W 070 19.490. This launch is technically in Portland but close enough to the line so you can throw a quarter. It will take you appromately five hours to paddle this section and pull out at the East End Beach. You can also pull out at Martin’s Point which is a little less. You are going with the current but the time you take will be impacted by the tide and any wind you encounter as you get below the falls. You will want to time it so you are below the falls at about mid to high tide for the best paddling. This is a spectacular paddle. Under no circumstances should you try to paddle through the falls. It is essentially Class IV-V whitewater and extremely dangerous.
Why have I provided you will all of this information? You might find it helpful in any future paddling trip where you are out to enjoy this beautiful river or just maybe out to find some geocaches along the way.
Good Luck!
