This is Outlaw Rock, so named because it was used as a hideout for Billy the Kid and his 'friends', Tom O'Follard, Dave Rudabaugh, and others. Legend has it that these 'good ole boys' would rustle a small bunch of cattle around what is present day Canutillo, TX, drive them up the Rio Grande to Fort Seldon, and sell them to the Cavalry. Then they would ride up the canyon to this Rock where they could see when the cavlry left the Fort to protect the travelers on the Jornada del Muerto (Journey of the Dead) in their travels to and from Santa Fe. When the soldiers left the Fort, Billy and his boys wouldgo back and 'borrow' the cattle again and take them back south along the Rio Grande and sell them again. While you cannot actually see Fort Seldon from this Rock, you can see where the soldiers would have traveled to get to the Jornada. BYOP
