Geocache Description:

Red Top Cemetery serves the rural area around Hallsville. It is a microcosm of history traceable in the stones placed there. The first dates to 1829, the last in the recent past. The church was founded there in 1822 and continues to serve the area.

The cache is located to the side of the burial grounds near the tree and fence line on the west side.

But don't visit this site without walking among the stones. In particular notice the earliest set of stones comprised of matching head and foot stones each for a man and for his wife. The primitive style markers, referred to as anthropomorphic, were locally carved and engraved. Notice the engraving. There are only a few of this type of marker in the Boonslick area.

From the most primitive to some very elegant, this cemetery proved a great learning experience for me as I wandered through and noted the evolution of stones from early to present.

Enjoy my gallery of photos.
