Geocache Description:

Small Bison type container slightly smaller than a 35mm.

The true reason for bringing you here is about 15 yards to the west as outlined below. Associated waypoint MONMNT

The cemetery to the immediate west of this cache was founded in 1854 when an outbreak of smallpox plagued the area and local residents needed a place to bury the victims.

Since that time it has become the resting place for many prominent people from the area. One such individual is Jacob Haish and his wife Sophia.

Who actually invented barbed wire has always been a bit of controversy, however there are those who believe it was the sole invention of Jacob Haish. During, and even after, his life in DeKalb he was responsible for many of the buildings such as a hospital and library as well as being a very generous philanthropist overall. However in the last 20 years or so of his life he strongly believed their was a local conspiracy against him.

Because of this it was his wish that his headstone never be duplicated. This led to the Haish estate taking out a copyright on the monument. Since the estate is self-perpetuating, the copyright will never expire.

The copyright, which is at N 41 54.584 W 088 45.634 reads "Copyright 1928 - Robert Trigg & Sons", an very respected Rockford firm at them time.

NOTE: Some have mentioned the dog statue to the south. Take a moment and look over the area there. Aside from being the resting place for many beloved pets, the statue is there to honor dogs that have served, many of which are resting near the statue.
