Geocache Description:

A bit of local History soon forgotten.

W.R.Curry Sawmill

Built in the 20’s on Portage Lake in Dudley Township.
W.R. Curry was aware of the lands owned by the Canadian Land and Emigration Company which was in extended receivership as one of the fall-outs of the great depression. W.R. and John Harris of the Mill Valley Company both converged on the same two blocks of land which were available in Dudley Township for purchase from the Canadian Land and Emigration Company. Both men wanted the same property and rather than delaying the purchase, giving time for someone else to come along, they tossed a coin. Harris purchased what is now the Greater Toronto Region Scout Reserve on and around Kennabi Lake while W.R.’s tract was the Portage Lake property -- over 4,000 acre. For the fee of about $1, 00 an acre. From the Canadian Land and Emigration Company.
The Mill was built on Portage Lake and the livery (stable) was located just up the road from the mill site and the bunkhouse was located by the corner just before you got to the mill.
Trees were harvested north of 2 Island [East] Lake and brought to the mill on an ‘ICE ROAD’ which was built parallel to the Dudley/Kennaway road over the swamp and continuing to cross over Portage Lake to the Mill.
The Mill was in operation until the mid 40’s. My understanding was that the Boiler Blew up.
The only parts of the Mill operation which remain to this day are the Root Cellar near what was once the Bunkhouse and the Cement Footings of the Mill beside the Lake.
