This cache is located at the Caldwell Cemetery north of Caldwell, Ks. This small group of original stones are set in a replica of the old cemetery.
The original 1-acre Boot Hill Cemetery is actually a mile east of this cemetery, just off Highway 49. It was used to bury the dead from Caldwell's early gunfights, many illnesses and cattle drive accidents. The Cemetery slowly was destroyed by prairie fires, lack of fences, cattle herds moving along the Chisholm Trail, and finally, by farming encroachment. It is presently in a wheat field and at some times during the year the outline of the cemetery can be seen from the highway.
Here at the Caldwell Cemetery, "The Talking Tombstones", a re-enactment of the lives of Caldwell's infamous cow town characters from the late 1800's "come back" to tell their stories standing at their real graves. This is held several times throughout the year and by appointment.
This is a small cache. Please bring a pen.
NOTE: I have replaced the original container because people are having trouble putting it back like they found it and I keep finding the log on the ground. This is now a bison tube. PLEASE put it back UPSIDE down so that the next cacher can retrieve it. Thanks!
PS you might want to have tweezers with you as well.
