As you pause under the shade of this small Knockaway tree, look to the North.
First, the flagpole with monument commemorating the establishment of Evergreen Cemetery in 1874. The flagpole, erected in 2003, was the Eagle Scout project of Skidmore's Kyle Stubenthal.
Second, the Liberty Tree Korean War Veterans Memorial. On November 14th, 2005, veterans of Beeville VFW Post 9170 and Ladies Auxilliary, along with community members and representatives of S-T ISD, gathered beneath the big oak tree at the entrance of Skidmore's Evergreen Cemetery to honor those who died in the Korean War and to recognize those few veterans still among us.
The Origin of The Liberty Tree
Every colonial community had a liberty tree- a place where early patriots gathered to talk about freedom from England. Under British rule, any political gathering would have been illegal if it had been held indoors and viewed as a formal gathering. Trees became meeting places as it looked like they had casually met. These trees -nicknamed Liberty Trees came to symbolize freedom, and many were cut down by the British Troops to undermine morale, but the spirit of freedom continued to flourish. The last surviving Liberty Tree- a Tulip Poplar in Annapolis, Maryland succumbed to old age in 1999. The VFW Foundation teamed with American Forests to restore the Liberty Tree Legacy throughout the United States.
