Geocache Description:

A bush walk up to the top of MacGregor Peak with magnificent views from Hippolyte Rocks around to Eaglehawk neck. Take your lunch and take it all in.

This cache is located at the top of MacGregor Peak on the Forestier Peninsula. It is sign posted as 3 hours return although I did the trip including placing the cache in 2:05.

Turn off the Arthur Hwy and proceed to the parking area. From here, walk along the road for about 100m. Your choice now is to pick which way to go.
The obvious choice is turn left and follow the signposted track up to a track junction. This track has a large tree fallen across it and is fairly steep. Follow this track until you reach a cross junction, turn left up towards the fire tower.
The other choice is to follow the road around to the right, which is not as steep and starts to flatten out. Follow this road to a T junction, turn left and go past the water hole (on the left about 40m from the junction). Continue along the road until you reach the cross junction, go straight on up to the fire tower.
Once you reach the tower, you may like to look for The Curse of The FTF #4 cache, located close by.
MacGregor Peak track continues on past the tower and the track is fairly easy to follow. It is marked with tree tape (red, yellow, blue), plastic arrows (orange and red) and also rock cairns. There are a couple of sharp turns you may miss on the return, so keep an eye out from the markers.

Once you arrive at the peak, go around to the opposite side of the trip point and look for the gap through the trees to the large rocks. From there you can see the views and the cache is located to your left. Watch out for the long drops and large cracks !!
The cache is located along the natural rock wall on the left, under a large rock, hidden by some branches - see photo.

As this cache is near 600m ASL, it would be wise to take warm clothing, raincoat, sunscreen, hat, food and lots of water with you. Make the most of the 3 hour trip and stay for lunch.

Note: 10 Feb 14. Due to the devastating fires of January 2013, a huge area of this forest was burnt. The fire spotter told me today that although the fire went through here, it was a slow, not intense burn. As you are walking up from the fire tower, the track is a little hard to follow. Look for rock cairns and the occasional tree tape. You may even spot some melted plastic arrows.
At one point approximately 660m from the cache, the fire burnt up to the edge of the track and stopped (maybe it was a control line?) Once you reach this point the track goes off into the unburnt scrub.
