Geocache Description:

A lovely series through Greystoke Forest.

A series of caches around Greystoke Forest. I have devised these to be done in order, but you can do No.3 as a solo cache if you haven’t got much time. This is a lovely walk through the forest and follows roads and paths all the way. For most of the way I have used forest signs to assist you and it is only the last little section where I divert you from the normal path to enjoy an excellent view across to Carrock Fell and beyond.

The total route is about 6.7 miles and although it has some changes in elevation the fact that it is on forest roads for most of it makes it a little easier. For those of you slightly more adventurous I planted the caches on mountain bike and it is a good route on the bike. This is also an excellent walk for the those of you with dogs - loads of sticks!

There are loads of different ways to get to each cache but I have tried to devise a route that gets you round most of the forest. Please be aware that this is an actively managed forest with lots of logging going on at various places. For most of the time access to the forest by vehicle is restricted, if you are lucky enough to get into the forest you could attempt No1 and No.2 by vehicle, but I would strongly advise that if you want to do this you should only attempt it in a 4x4 or similar.

The starting point for my route is The Larches Forest Car Park situated at
N 54 42.188 W 002 55.561

There is large sign here and this is the start of your walk. To get to Cache No.1 you need to follow the red and blue arrows. They set off into the forest and at the first forest track they take you right up the hill. Keep following the red and blue arrows.

You GPS will help keep you on the path. When you eventually get to the first cache you will see that there are a number of options. Put in the co-ordinates for cache No.2 and the path will be obvious. You will then see that you are still following the red and blue paths. Following the GPS you will see that the path then turns into the red path alone. You will then come across a small shed where the red path goes into the woods. Do not follow the red path here, continue on the road and you will see that it turns into the green path. Follow this as far as it goes and you will reach cache No.2.

Now it’s off back to the car park. Follow the signs for the Larches. You will have to walk up a fairly steep hill at one point and then you arrive at a crossroads. Turn left and you should now recognise the road you were on earlier. Now travel back on a return route.

However a slight detour on the way back (it is probably a more direct route back to the car if you are feeling tired by now). At the top of the hill on the way back there is a semi-permanent Black Container (large) that is obviously used by the loggers. Opposite it there is a lane that goes down to a disused water works. Travel down here. Stood facing the water works there is fence running to your right hand side. Follow the path alongside it to cache No.3.

Now stand back and admire the views. Nearly back now…

Follow the path along the edge of a slight cliff and into the woods. After about 10 minutes walking you should arrive back at your car.
