Geocache Description:

35mm magnetic, you will need a pen.

Sheerness Lifeboat Station is situated at Garrison Point within the Port of Sheerness, which used to be an old naval dockyard. Unfortunately the station is not open to the general public and visits are strictly by appointment only therefore the cache has been placed close to the docks. Parking spaces can be found in the one way street through Bluetown.

The station is ideally positioned to answer the many calls for assistance from mariners in the River Medway and Thames Estuary. The station operates both an all weather Trent class lifeboat and an inshore D class lifeboat.

In 1969 the Royal National Lifeboat Institution decided to place a Lifeboat at Sheerness on evaluation, the Lifeboat was the "Ernest William and Elizabeth Ellen Hinde " ON 1017, in 1970 the Committee of Management decided to establish Sheerness as a permanent Lifeboat Station provided a satisfactory berth be made available.

1970 - The new station Lifeboat "Gertrude" ON 847, a Watson class Lifeboat was placed on service on the 22nd April and was berthed in the Great Basin in Sheerness Docks.

1974 - The Waveney class Lifeboat "Helen Turnbull" was placed on service on the 4th April and was moored in a new berth near the Gun Wharf

1985 - Old berth considered to be no longer tenable and the Lifeboat was moved to a new berth in the Lower Camber adjacent to the Gun Wharf.

1996 - The Waveney class Lifeboat was withdrawn from service and replaced by the new Trent class Lifeboat "George and Ivy Swanson" ON 1211, the Lifeboat was later named by HRH The Duke of Kent.

2006 - New D-Class IB1 Inshore lifeboat "Eleanor" D-662, placed on station. D-513 withdrawn to relief fleet.

In the stations history the lifeboat crew have been presented with 14 awards for gallantry.

The good work continues.
