The Linton Long Walk is for the die-hard hikers out there. A series of 9 caches on a 7 mile walk which explores part of the Weald, looking down to it for some of the time from the brow of the Quarry Hills.
The route is wonderful at blossom time when the orchards of the western section become a pink fairyland.
The eastern section passes through the parkland of Linton and Boughton Monchelsea, where the great house is set in a deer park.
The walk passes very close to Church Micros Nos 803 and 804 Linton Church and Boughton Monchelsea Church.
It is suggested that at least 4 hours are set aside to complete the whole walk. This leg could be completed in less than 1/2 hour if undertaken by itself.
The circular trail is mostly along footpaths and quiet country lanes, some of which cross the busy A229 or pass rivers and lakes, so keep an eye on your dogs and children. In summer long sleeved shirts and long trousers are recommended as brambles and nettles in places might be quite high.
Many of the paths can be quite muddy even in the summer so good boots are recommended.
Explorer maps 136 and 148 will help with navigation, however additional waypoints are provided below to help guide you along the route.
When this cache was first placed I used a 35mm film canister, I have relocated the cache (slightly) and replaced it with a camouflaged 200ml loc and loc container containing pencil and log book. Hopefully it will be easier to find without being spotted by muggles - please relocate exactly as found - otherwise it can be seen when approaching the hide.
The pencil is fairly small, so you may wish to take your own writing implement. Make a note of the additional clue in the logbook which will guide you to the Bonus Cache. Good luck
Parking is recommended at the village car park at Linton Church. On 364 days of the year it is possible to walk directly into the churchyard from the car park, but on the first Monday in February the gate is locked to prevent the path from becoming a right of way.
Start this leg at Waypoint D. Turn left on to the road and after a short distance turn right after a chain-link fence protecting a private fishery on to a footpath which winds through scrubland until it comes to a stile into Linton Park. Climb the stile and then keep the fence to the right, walking across lovely parkland with a view of the magnificent cream-coloured house whose north front was seen earlier. It dates from around 1730 though it was substantially enlarged 100 years later.
Cross the iron stile close to the northern edge of the lake and then keep the railings to the left at first, soon bearing slightly to the right to aim just to the right of a broken down building where there is a stile leading on to the main road. Finish this leg at Waypoint E.
