Geocache Description:

This is one in a series of caches on things that once existed but only exist in our memories now.

In 1971 Bill Schmidt would carry on his family’s legacy and build the third Coca-Cola plant in Elizabethtown. This iconic building was state of the art for its time with large columns out front with cantilevered offices over the parking area. Large fountains and flags were out front. The fountains were lit by floodlights at night. The design carried over inside the large lobby where a 2 story backlit mosaic mural greeted visitors. In 1976 the Schmidt’s added a museum to the second floor to display their large collection of Coca-Cola Memorabilia; this collection would grow into the largest private collection in the world and later be moved to a dedicated museum of its own. As an Elizabethtown resident, it was always a matter of pride to look on the side of your coke can and see “Canned under the authority of the Coca-Cola Company Elizabethtown, KY. 42701” instead of one of the larger markets.

At the end of the twentieth century Bill sold the Coca-Cola rights to a company in Arkansas. He still bottled the generic drinks for a few years before selling the plant to the Colt Beverage company. Colt’s time was short and soon the place was closed as a bottling plant for good. Sections of the plant are currently being sold off for different businesses. The old offices were sold to Fort Knox Company and the frontage that faces Dixie Highway has been revamped for store fronts. Where the old fountains used to be is now a parking lot. I still remember the fountain pond that fell over a water fall into a pool in the parking area, Do you Remember?
