In the late 1870's a Dover Businessman decided that it was time to build a store that would be, when completed, the tallest building in town. When the Dover Fire Department purchased the newest thing in fire fighting equipment they decided to wait until after winter and then on March 19, 1886 they 'baptized' the new building using their steam-powered equipment to make sure they could reach the roof in case of a fire. In 2004 Joe's Shoe Repair which was adjacent to the baptized High Rise was destroyed by a fire but the High Rise only received smoke and water damage. In 2006 the entire city block on the opposite corner was destroyed by fire and again the baptized High Rise was untouched. It would seem that there is a Divine Protection of this building since it was baptized in 1886. Maybe all buildings should be baptized like this one was. Though the building is no longer considered tall, it still serves the public small, medium, and large.
Thank you to Dover's Fire Chief Russ Volkert for providing me with the photographs that I have added to the Gallery.
Congratulations to Team DazzMazz for FTF!!!!!
