Kaltanenai is settled near Žeimenis Lake, beside river Žeimena
head. Unique place of city is the square, which border the lake.
There are no more squares like this in Lithuania.
Kaltanenai was first mentioned in XV century, when grand duke
Žygimantas Kestutaitis gives them to noblemen Narbutai. In year
1633 church of Virgin Mary Angelic was built here. Later the
monastery of Franciscans was settled here and Kaltanenai became the
town. From 1895 to 1899 the railroad was build in Kaltanenai.
Every linguist and ethno-cultural specialist in Lithuania must know
Kaltanenai, because here are much of verbal art and traditions
preserved here.
