Geocache Description:

Series of seven caches in the beautiful Howgill Fells. Reaching the caches involve a significant hike or fell run over much rugged and steep terrain that includes some river crossings. This series is definitely not for the faint hearted!

The seven caches can be attempted singly but have been placed to be ideally completed as a series that circumnavigates some of the lesser known areas of the Howgills taking you into valleys and onto hill tops that seldom see walkers.

Prepare yourself for a most enjoyable and exhilarating experience. The views along the route that I will take you are stunning and breathtaking.

Start Point

The suggested start point is Carlingill where there is off-road parking. The total distance from start to finish is 28km (18 miles) Therefore a whole day would be needed to complete the Series.

Another Slateman cache - ‘Gorgeous Gill’ is located close to the start point.

You may choose to start from other locations around the Howgills. The choice is yours.

The caches are micros - slightly bigger than a 35mm container but camouflaged. The majority of them should be fairly easy to find with 'spoiler' pictures added just in case.

Bonus Cache

The seventh cache is a mystery cache. The first six caches have a unique number recorded at the top of the log that you must record to obtain the coordinates of the 7th Howgills Hills & Dales #7 - Bonus Cache.

The Bonus Cache is a regular size cache that contains a special, very well earned prize for the person who is FTF!

Howgills Hills & Dales #5 - Lune Source

As you reach Leathgill Bridge you will realise there is no bridge as such, simply a saddle that gets you into the southern tip of Weasdale. Weasdale is another lesser known valley that has magnificent slopes either side. There is no need to lose height, simply traverse the valley top onto Green Bell. As you approach the summit there is a right fork that takes you toward the cache coordinates.

The Cache

The cache is located just below to two or three springs that are the first feeders of the River Lune. The springs initially feed Dale Gill, Greenside Beck and Dry Beck before reaching Newbiggin-on-Lune where the River Lune starts by name. Here it heads west to Tebay before heading south to Lancaster and into the Irish Sea.

Once you have found this cache you need return south-west and head for Randygill Top.

Onwards and upwards to HHD#6 - The Calf………..
