Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden during a lengthy day hike in the Blue Mountains south of Dayton,WA on Deadman Mountain. During the hike we came across the remains of a Navy Hellcat fighter plane crash. During WWII the Pasco airport was used as a Naval airbase for a squardron of Hellcats. During a training fight over this area one of them did not make it. This hiking trail is just outside the Mill Creek watershed for the City of Walla Walla. In fact you are right next to the signs posting the boundary and warning people to not cross over. The cache is hidden beyond the crash site about a 1/2 mile more. At this point we decided to not walk any further and simply hide the cache and turn around. The cache is in a used plastic container with a screw off top. Contains a log book, flashlight (new!),Walla Walla Balloon stampede pin, highlighters, and a couple of quarters. Begin your trip heading south from Dayton towards Ski Bluewood. Continue beyond the gate to Bluewood on forest road 64. Start of trail (not highly visiable) is at 46 03.764N~117 54.905W next to road 64. About 20-30 yards in front of the trail starting is a corner in the road to park. The hike to the cache is about 2 miles and is for those who are fairly healthy. Wear long paints because of lots of brush and tall grasses. About 1 1/2 miles into the hike look for the crash site to your right at 46 04.147N~117 56.591W. There is a lot of brush and it is steep down to the site. But you should be able to see part of a wing and other parts. The engine is even further down the mountain to the east. Please respect this historical site and take nothing with you. Go to (visit link) to see a video and history of this airplane wreck. Now about 1/2 mile further down the trail you will find the cache. Hiking trail is #3211 on forest service map. Please give yourself a lot of time on this find. There is more uphill hiking coming back than going in.
