Geocache Description:

Okay. Here is the story for this one. A loooong time ago (on the order of 25+ years), one of the things my friends and I used to do was ride quads in the mountains where this cache is. One day, while setting at the northern of two pipelines, I noticed a trail leading to the right. And as luck would have it, a few hundred feet into the woods, I found a USGS disk. More specifically, I found a reference disk. So, following in the direction indicated on the reference disk, I found the triangulation disk.

I've always wanted to see if this particular bench was still there, considering it was over 25 years ago that I miraculously found it. Today (Aug 1, 2009) was the day.

The posted coordinates will take you to this benchmark labeled "Winter", or designation KX2247. This benchmark is a triangulation disk, established by the USGS in the early 1960's. Most are accompanied by references (other nearby disks which are used to relocate the original, should it be disturbed) and I found (from memory) where one used to be, but it appears to have been vandalized. Please do not disturb the benchmark itself.

Once you find the benchmark, and in true surveying fashion, you'll need to either use a traditional compass or the electronic compass in your GPS, if it has one. Setting your compass on the disk itself, the cache location is Due North about 35' away, near the missing reference disk location. Did you see where it was?

Getting to the cache location is relatively easy if approaching from the west, however, I would highly suggest referencing this site (satellite view), Google Earth, Bing or some other topo service to see where your going. The western approach is best started from Healy Road, off of Old Route 22, just below the summit. The terrain rating will be a definite 5 if approaching from the east. The trail I mentioned goes between 2 pipelines, so after your done finding this one, enjoy the view from 2 close overlooks!

You'll need something to write with, also. The cache is just big enough for some small trade items, but I didn't have any to leave.

Have fun guys!

After thinking about it, I bumped the terrain rating up simply due to the long hike if coming from the west, or the steep mountain if coming from the east.

Congratulations to The Carels for the FTF!
