Haunting Hides "Phantom Army" Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

GR8Caches: I went by again to check on this location but it just doesn't look like it will support this letterbox anymore. I hate to do this on such an old hide of ours that has had a good run but it would require a lot of changes if I could even figure out what to do with it so maybe we can bring something else back here.

Geocache Description:

Another in our Haunting Hides Series. The cache is not at the listed coordinates. The listed coordinates will take you to a flag pole. Follow the clues to find the cache.

Survey your surroundings. On one side of you there will lay some of the "Phantom Army." From your current spot walk among this army to reach your next destination, "The Gravel Road" Follow this road until you reach the Angel. Upon reaching the Angel look beyond for the 3 Crosses. Proceed toward the crosses turning with the path just before reaching the crosses. Continue on the path until you reach the tall wood structure on the right of the path. Walk to the Kitchen and keep going till you reach the end. Turn right and go to the 3rd Y. There you will find what you are seeking. Reach in to the headless tree above the Y. In the summer the tree will be overgrown with vines.

This is a DAYLIGHT ONLY cache. Do not attempt at night the grounds are closed at dusk.

In 1881, our nation was in danger of splitting apart and troops were sent to Charles Town under General Pinkney. They camped on the ridge around the bend on High St. Since the war did not engage these men there was little for the soldiers to do, each evening they treated the townspeople to a parade. They would march down the road playing their fifes keeping time with the steady beat of drums. Victims of a cholera outbreak, many of those men never left Charles Town and now lie buried on the west bank of the flag pole, but their spirits remain fretful. It is hard to find a resident of the town that at one time or another has not rushed to their window expecting to watch a parade go by. Instead they hear only the eerie notes of the fifes and the steady beat of the drums. The Marchers come closer and pass on, the sounds receding into the evening shadows. We hear, but cannot see the Phantom Army parading down the street.
