This cache highlights the Allegrippis trail
system. The coordinates
take you to the overlook area featured on the trail brochure,
available at the Seven Points Visitors
Center. This will
require a minimum 3 mile hike (round-trip) or minimum 5 mile bike
ride.
The Allegrippis trail system,
http://raystown.nab.usace.army.mil/Activities/agt.htm,
is a sustainable 30+ mile multi-use stacked loop complex developed
by a team lead by the Friends of Raystown
Lake. Although
developed under the guidance of the International Mountain Biking
Association (IMBA) it is also suitable for hiking.
Mountain bike parking is available adjacent to
the Susquenhannock
campground. You can
select trails from the network mapping, available at
http://raystown.nab.usace.army.mil/Activities/images/AGT_TrailMap.pdf,
to reach the cache location near the intersection of the Ridge,
Berry Patch, and Rays Revenge
Trails. Take a copy of
the map with you.
A closer parking spot for a hiking approach is
available at the end of Bakers Hollow
Road. Do not block
gate. The first 0.4
mile of this approach requires a 250’ climb on a grass/dirt former
logging road to reach its intersection with the Grippis
Trail. That road is to
the right, just beyond the gate of the parking
area. Follow Grippis to
the left and continue on the Ridge Trail to reach the cache.
The cache is a 2 quart lock-n-lock container,
located about 150’ off the trail, just above a cliff and
overlook. Cache is on
the upslope side of a fallen tree, just above the root area, hidden
by a stone and bark. A
spoiler photo is included.
The 2nd overlook from the trail itself includes a
view across the lake to the Hawn’s Overlook, where the Damming View
cache is located. A
driving approach to that cache is highly
recommended during your visit if you are going on in to
Huntingdon.
These trails are two-way and feature many sharp bends with
limited site distance.
Be alert for other approaching users (particularly bikes).
