On this block, the hill or "ridge" became too steep for a regular road for vehicles. Instead, The road on the block ends in a flight of stairs and then reconnects to another road on top, confusing many drivers along the way. This is a rare "step street" found in Brooklyn.
Step streets are streets that are composed entirely of steep steps. As a rule they were placed on hills that were too steep to build a road, yet in a rare concession to pedestrians, it was determined to allow them access to the streets denied to motor transportation at 74th and 76th Streets, recalling the Montmartre section of Paris.
On top of the stairs are some magnificent mansions including a very interesting Gothic styled one. It was originally owned by the founder of Blue Cross.
