Une modeste famille du nom de Masseret apparaît au XIIe siècle, et la présence d’un château au sommet de la colline du bourg est attestée dès le XIIe siècle. Le château incluait une tour quadrangulaire et un corps de logis protégés par un système de fossés. La position de cette forteresse, commandant le passage entre haut et bas Limousin, fut essentielle au moment de la Guerre de Cent Ans.
Avant la construction de la tour, sur les ruines de la forteresse un majestueux hêtre, planté aux alentours de 1792 rappelait symboliquement l'ancien château. Il fut foudroyé le 4 février 1946.
Lors de la construction du château d’eau en 1954, plusieurs fonds de creusets pour fondre un métal rare (il existe de très anciennes mines d’or et de plomb argentifère à proximité de Masseret) ont été recueillis dans les ruines de la forteresse.
Cet édifice d'aspect moyennageux est donc de construction récente. Elle possède à son sommet une table d'orientation et une vue panoramique exceptionnelle jusqu'aux Monts d'Auvergne.

A modest family of the name of Masseret appears in XIIe century, and the presence of a castle at the top of the hill of the borough is attested as of in XIIe century. The castle included a quadrangular tower and a main building protected by a system from ditches. The position of this fortress, ordering the passage between top and the low Limousin, was essential at the time of the One hundred Year old War.
Long before the construction of the recent tower, around 1792, a majestic beech tree was planted on the ruins of the fortress, symbolically recalled the old castle. He was struck on 4 February 1946.
During the construction of the water tower in 1954 several funds of crucibles to melt a rare metal (there exist very old silver-bearing lead and gold mines near Masseret) were found in the ruins of the fortress.
So this medieval-looking building is recent construction. It has at its top an orientation table and a panoramic view to the Monts d'Auvergne.

Een bescheiden familie met de naam Masseret in de XIIe eeuw, getuige de aanwezigheid van een kasteel op de top van de heuvel van het stadje. Het kasteel had een vierhoekige omloop en met in het midden woningen die door grachten werden beschermd. De positie van dit fort, die de doorgang tussen noord en zuid Limousin beheerste, was essentieel gedurende de Honderjarige oorlog.
In 1792, ver voor de constructie van de toren, was er op de ruïnes van het fort een beuk geplant. Symbolisch had hij de naam “Het oude kasteel”. In 1946 is de beuk door de bliksem getroffen en afgestorven.
Bij de bouw van de watertoren in 1954 zijn in de ruïnes van de vesting verschillende smeltkroezen gevonden, die gebruikt werden om een zeldzaam metaal te smelten (er bestonden zeer oude goud en een zilverhoudende loodmijnen vlakbij Masseret).
Dus dit middeleeuws aandoende gebouw is heel recent. Op de top vindt u een oriëntatietafel met een uitzonderlijk panoramisch uitzicht tot aan de Bergen van de Auvergne.
