According to the pioneer residents at Shongweni their post office
used to be the smallest post office in South Africa, and the second
smallest in the world. The post office was so small that only one
person could fit inside and everyone else would stand outside at
the window, rain or shine. The switchboard for Shongweni was inside
the post office as well, and after Shongweni was linked to the
automatic telephone exchange in Hillcrest the post office was
closed.
Today the post office only consists of the walls and a roof, and is
on private property. I have permission from the owners Inga and
Bill Nicol to place the cache at the post office, but you do not
need to go onto the property to retrieve the cache.
Feel free to enter the post office through the gate (B28) as Inge
is happy for us to visit the post office.
Inge and Bill stay at the top off the property in an interesting
under ground house.
