[ENG] Kaltenes
kalvas (Kaltene stone formations) are large ridge-like stone
formations in the forest approximately 1,5 km from Kaltene
seashore. Such stone formations are not found near any other parts
of the Latvian seashore. Geologists believe they have formed
several thousand years ago, when the Baltic ice lake retreated from
this region. However, the locals have a different story to tell.
The local legend says that once upon the time there had been a
devil who had carried stones from Sweden to Talsi (town in Latvia
on nine hills) to build the tenth hill there. But he had been so
slow, that he had not managed to complete the task during the dark
hours of the day. So, with the dawn, when the first cock sang in
Kaltene, he threw the stones en route and fled. Today Kaltenes
kalvas is a nature preserve of state significance, and in 2006 a
nature trail was made to visit the place. The largest formation
called Velna kalva (Devil’s ridge) had reached as high as
tree-tops, but during 1960s and 1970s it was completely destroyed,
as stones were taken away and crushed for road-building purposes.
The remains of the former stone formation which can be seen today
are around 300 m long and 2 m high. There is an opinion that in
ancient times kalvas have been sacred places, and there are a
number of legends and tales about them.

is a 0.9 l watertight click&lock plastic box. Contains logbook,
pen, pencil, sharpener and a handful of trading items. ATTENTION!
Do not disturb the moss, do not demolish anything and do not throw
around any stones. To reach the cache you only need to step off the
trail a couple of steps. You do not have to crawl under or jump
over the trail railing. During the summer and autumn watch out for
berry- and mushroom-pickers to whom your activities might look
suspicious. When wet, plank-ways are very slippery.
Enjoy!
