A short stroll starting from Pontmoile Basin with a tarmac path and fencing down alongside the Afon Llwyd. Only sixty yards from canal footpath.
This is the fifth of a series in and aound New Inn. The suggested route to the cache is a 10min stroll starting from Ponymoile Basin. This route takes you along the canal and then down some steps alongside the river to the cache site. The basin lies on the Pontypool stretch of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. Originally a toll point, the old tollhouse still exists on the bank, called Junction Cottage it was built in 1814. The basin itself is a large expanse of water adjacent to the canal. It is used for turning narrowboats and filling up with water. Today the basin is something of a visitor attraction. Narrow boats and cruisers can be seen along the private stretch of moorings and day boat hire was introduced in 2007. The boats can be hired for full days or half days. There is a small café which was itself formerly a canal boat. There is a picnic area and several amenities (toilets, car park, etc.) Opening hours for the cafe are varied, depending on the season and the weather. The basin is located just five minutes' walk away from Pontypool Park (and other caches - Grotto Micro and Park Gates) and is a handy stopping point for boats en route to Goetre Wharf. Suggested parking is at the basin N51 41.782 W003 01.401 There is now a fee for Car Park but on street parking available on Fountain Road. The cache itself is situated near the banks of the Afon Llwyd and can be a fast flowing river so please supervise children. This is the main 'Highway' to McDonalds for local youngsters so please be mindful of muggles and replace with care. Thankyou.
