Geocache Description:

Take a walk on beautiful Belfry Beach in Gabarus Lake, Cape Breton. The cache is a lock n’ lock container with some duck and beach theme trade items, a log book, a pencil, and a Canadian Cacher pin for the First to Find. I’m also launching my “Sproose the Travelling Moose” TB in this cache.

To get there from Sydney, take Highway 327 to Gabarus Lake then take Belfry Road (on left) to get to the beach.

Bucephala albeola

Bucephala albeola is the scientific name for my favorite duck, the Bufflehead. You may have guessed that it (along with two other ducks in the same Genus) is also the inspiration behind my username. The Bufflehead duck is a diving duck that gets its name from its disproportionately large head. In Cape Breton, during the summer, they can be seen of the coast in areas such as Belfry Beach. In the winter, they retreat to coastal inlets where food is more abundant. Unlike other diving ducks, the Bufflehead can rise directly and quickly from the surface of the water when taking off, instead of having patter over the surface for a considerable distance. While visiting the cache, please take binoculars or a scope with you and see if you can spot Buffleheads or any other sea birds off the coast. (Image and information from by Robie Tufts)
