Geocache Description:

Most all modern communities likely have older stone quarries about which were used for a variety of building purposes. Whitehall was no different. Shale was a valuable commodity to local families in that it offered an affordable material that could be used for building foundations for homes and other buildings.

Located on the original Quackenbush farm, the shale was hauled on a regular basis in the winter time, both for building construction and for road base as well.
With the last load of shale being hauled off from the area in 1948, the pit began its own reclamation process. Today it’s surrounded by agriculture but rest assured, if you come from the old Quackenbush residence located on Ok lane where only a foundation now remains, you can traverse to this cache across land were permission was received by the land owner.

For those who may want to find this without a GPS unit, here’s all you have to do:
Travel east from Whitehall one mile on Hwy 53. Just before the bridge which takes you over the Pigeon Creek, there will be a drive going north. It has a stop sign at this intersection. This is Ok Ln… (Google Earth shows it to be that as well)
Go north/northeast up this drive 690 ft, where then you can park (Old Quackenbush Farm located here once). You’ll know you’re at the right spot when you see a power line and pole that really doesn’t goes anywhere from that point on.
Now once here, you will need to walk 650 ft north west until you get to, then around and then on top of the shale pit area. You can either take this direct route, or go north along the wooded line, then west along the fence line you run into. Once on top, there’s a Poplar tree that has a crotch in it. You’ll find the cache near that for now. . . Enjoy the area – the view from here is better in the winter time when the foliage is off… While there, perhaps reflect back to the time when most communities would come together to work in such places for the betterment of all.

Oh, note also, the stamp/stamp pad are not trade items, so please please please, don't remove these from the cache -Thanks ! ! !

Placement of this Letterbox Hybrid Cache was made possible by an ammo box gift we received, through the “Lonely Cache Game” we participated in. You can learn more about the “Lonely Cache Game” by visiting the Wisconsin Geocaching Association website.

Permission to place this cache on private land was given by William and Lisa Quackenbush. The property is deer hunted by the family, but if there’s no vehicles parked at the above location, you’ll be just fine in you quest… No other hunters have permission to hunt this property.
