Geocache Description:

Micro cache in a cemetery in Vienna with a terrific view of Maine's Western mountains.

I hope my fellow cachers read this as this cache comes with a story. This area, Vienna, Mt. Vernon, Fayette has had a good deal of spirtualists as residents for over a hundred and fifty years. Many of them are buried here and their grave stones are very unique. In the center of the cemetery you'll see grave stones carved in the shape of tree trunks. (No the cache is not a "stump" cache. These are rock and will never rot!) Instead of "died," the date of death is referred to as "Cut down." When I was in high school and working at an American Plan camp in Rome as a cabin boy, 3 of us came out here in the middle of the night to climb a 40 story Telstar relay tower that used to be located across the street from the cemetery. The climb was successful, very stupid thing to do, but hey, I was about 17 at the time...no fear, no brain, see tower, climb tower! To complete the night we pulled into the cemetery and one of my fellow "climbers" stole a conch shell which legend says was to be blown by folks in the cemetery to ward off gray spirits. I didn't think this was "cool" but it happened. We backed out of the cemetery at about 2 in the morning and a tire blew before we were on the road!. We changed the tire, drove about a mile down the road and another tire blew! Eikodokie is probably loving this story. Back at the camp the conch was placed on a shelf where we stayed, a room with no window and the thing started whistling. There were 3 of us who experienced this and I hadn't been drinking and hadn't tried pot at that point in my life. I personally returned the conch to its resting place the next morning. Now, about Abigail Sanborn. She was a well-known witch in the area and not always a "nice" witch. She died young and is buried about 25 feet from where I placed the cache. Her grave is legendary among spiritualists and other folks who get into the ghost thing. Her black gravestone has 3 lines on the bottom that you have to look hard to see as the moss has grown up and obscured it, but if you push the moss back you'll read "Friend nor physicians could keep her body from this grave, nor shall anybody keep her spirit from roaming the earth." Scary stuff, huh? The cache contains a log only so BYOP. As a "bonus", if you're so inclined, I sensed I dropped something when I was placing the cache. Turns out, one of mapachi's custom handmade nanos was hooked to the cache I placed and ended up on the ground presumably directly below where you'll find the cache. Hope somebody finds it and puts it in circulation. The nano is bronze and should show up nicely. While this is a public cemetery, please be respectful of those who are buried here and please do not do this cache at night! Congrats to BSAK07 for the FTF!
