Man’s Best Friend

(A story told by the Bloodhounds)

I get a real charge out of telling the story about the old watch dog here at the FEW Dam Park. You see the story goes that the original park manager had a dog that would stand guard over the building supplies during construction. In those days folks would steal building supplies and sell them for profit. Well this ole' dog was going to have none of that. He would sleep all day and work all night. The boys were building the brick house that the park manager was going to live in and one day had a whole load of lumber, bricks, copper pipe and several spools of copper wire delivered to the site. This smart dog knew that the copper brought a good penny at the scrap yard (he learned that from his buddy Junkyard Dog) and lumber was always in demand. All the way out here meant the supplies where easy pickings, or where they?

That night a storm moved in and the sky turned black. Rumbles of thunder could be heard in the distance as headlights appeared at the entrance. He knew those headlights meant trouble. This ole' dog knew better than to bark and moved in for a closer look. There in the dark was a mountain of a man loading the spools of wire onto his truck. Immediately the dog attacked but, the man held him off with a tire iron from the back of the truck. He went in circles and knocked down the top spools of wire. Well, that wire brace broke and wire stared to unravel all over the place. The large man was tripping over it and ultimately got his feet tangled in it. Another set of headlights appeared as the man reached for his shotgun from the seat. The park manager stepped out of his car and gave a holler but this crazy man just pumped a shell into the chamber and had some real bad intensions. He lifted the gun and pointed it right at the park manager not knowing who he was he said “now you get the heck out of here boy” and at that moment the storm had hit and lightning struck close. This dog didn’t think twice and grabbed up a mouth full of wire that was wrapped around the man’s feet and he done jumped just as high as he could into the air. Lightning came down from the sky in a bolt that lit up the night like the day, followed by a wicked crash of thunder. The gun fell followed by the man and the manger ran towards the dog and picked that ole' boy up but, you know it was just too late. The dog with all that wire acted like a lightning rod and likely saved that managers life, while giving up his own. That manager never did move in the house and grieved over the loss of his best friend. At night you can still hear that ole' boy cry and that guard dog still keeps watch over the area to protect it from wrong doers.

I love that story and admire the bravery of that dog. I don’t know how true it is but, I wouldn’t want to be the fool to try something stupid.

This is a two stage cache to remember this heroic canine. Stage one is marked exactly on the spot that the ole' dog died. This cache gives the coords to the final and is +/-12 feet of GZ. The final is in the location where it’s said the manager laid him to rest. Just like the nature of this dog, it won’t be easy but here again +/- 12 feet will likely yield a nice sized container that has all kinds of trade items in it and a log book. You will need to bring along paper and pen to write down the final coords and tweezers might be of some help too. A Man’s Best Friend Bloodhounded geocoin is the prize for the FTF!!! Good luck and remember to take your best friend and the little ones along for the fun. This cache is part of the "And BINGO Was His Name-O" series. Write down the letter and secret number under the lid of the cache.

Have fun and go fetch that cache

Congratulations go to Team Lucky, Go-Jo and Almost Here for the FTF! Way to go guys!!!!!!!
