This is an easy offset micro hidden on the seafront at Littlehampton.
Open all hours
This fondly remembered comedy classic, is credited to an idea inspired by Ronnie Barker who had a holiday home on Littlehampton seafront. He used to escape the pressures of his busy TV life, by staying with his family in this quiet Sussex resort.
The story goes that Ronnie used to pop round the corner to Basil Cooper’s shop in Norfolk Road (now Londis) for almost anything, as it was one of those shops that had so much stock that it spilled out onto the pavement, and you could never leave there without buying something.
The shop sign boasted “Open All Hours” and even when they did close, people knew they could always knock on the back door for something urgent.
The shop was run by Basil’s mother, Gladys, and being an old fashioned grocery store, they all wore brown overalls, used an old cash register and had a delivery bicycle for a number of years.
The shop was in the Cooper family from 1925 until it was sold in 1972, but still has the Cooper name above the door on the licensing notice.
Granville Road is not far away.
So the clues are there, even though it was written by Roy Clarke and set in Doncaster, Ronnie undoubtedly had a large input.
Look for a small write up on the right hand shop window.
