Originalmente diseñadas como una gran fuente dispuesta en la entrada de la naciente ciudad, las torres se han convertido en un símbolo distintivo de la zona conocida como Satélite, localizada en el municipio de Naucalpan de Juárez, en el Estado de México.
La planeación de las torres, una de las primeras escultura urbanas de grandes dimensiones en México, se inició en 1957 con la idea del escultor Mathias Goeritz y el arquitecto Luis Barragán, con la colaboración del pintor Jesús Reyes Ferreira.
En principio se contempló la construcción de siete cuerpos, de los cuales el más grande alcanzaría una altura de 200 metros; sin embargo, por falta de presupuesto se eliminaron dos cuerpos, quedando cinco torres y reduciendo su altura para que la torre más grande midiera 52 metros de altura y la menor 30. La idea original de Goeritz sobre el color de las torres es que fueran todas en diferentes gamas de naranja, pero fue persuadido por constructores y empresarios para que se pintaran en diferentes tonos, quedando en anaranjado, blanco y amarillo. Su influencia principal son las torres de San Gimignano en Italia.
De este modo, en los primeros días de marzo de 1958 las Torres de Satélite se inauguraron como símbolo de la naciente Ciudad Satélite, bajo el gobierno de Adolfo Ruiz Cortines. Recientemente, se ha propuesto que sean declaradas Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad ante la Unesco
The Torres de Satélite ("Satélite Towers") are located in Ciudad Satélite (Formerly known as "Elite"), an high class zone, in the northern part of Naucalpan, Mexico. One of the country's first urban sculptures of great dimensions, had its planning started in 1957 with the ideas of renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán, painter Jesús Reyes Ferreira and sculpturer Mathias Goeritz. The project was originally planned to be composed of seven towers, with the tallest one reaching a height of 200 meters (about 650 feet), but a budget reduction forced the design to be composed of only five towers, with the tallest measuring 52 meters (170 feet) and the shortest 30 meters (98 feet).
Goeritz originally wanted the towers to be painted in different shades of orange, but changed his mind later due to some pressure from constructors and investors. It was finally decided the towers would be painted in red, blue and yellow the so called primary subtractive colors with the addition of white.
Thus, in the first days of March 1958, the Satélite Towers were inaugurated as the symbol of the newborn and modern Ciudad Satélite. Recently, they have been promoted by the local government to be included into the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list, but not formally included yet
