Cherokee Dam was built by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the early 1940’s to provide hydroelectric power for the WWII war effort. Construction started on Aug. 1st. 1940, and was completed on December 5, 1941, the day before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Cherokee’s four generators have the capacity to produce 135,200 kilowatts of electricity. The dam was instrumental is providing the necessary power requirements for the secret operations that were taking place in Oak Ridge, Tn. that led to the development of the first atomic bomb.
The dam insures flood control for the Holston River Valley, and its reservoir provides excellent fishing and boating experiences for local residents, as well as the many tourist that frequent the campgrounds and parks that are strewn along the lakes more than 400 miles of shoreline.
Take a walk down by the water and a short climb up the hill is the best access route.
