Decorah Prairie Cemetery is located on Wisconsin State Highway 54 a quarter of a mile north of Hunter's Bridge and four miles east of Galesville.
The earliest white settlers in the Decorah Prairie region were Scots immigrants, several of whom formed ties of friendship with Indian tribes living nearby. The first recorded burial, that of a Cook child, occurred in 1851. The next burial, also that of a Cook child, did not take place until 1859. Thereafter, the cemetery has been in continual use.
The cemetery list includes the names of several members of Chief Decorah's band of Winnebago’s.
The Decorah Prairie Cemetery is fenced and well-maintained. When Mary Jane Hilton was transcribing the cemetery, she found a number of additional stones, many broken, piled up along the fence that surrounds the cemetery proper. This suggests that local farmers may have removed them from other sites nearby so that they could work the adjacent fields. It is unknown, therefore, how many other graves exist in the immediate vicinity but are now unmarked.
