Geocache Description:

A short walk (under 5 min) from the roadside...
(same old logbook & container, but thought it needed moving to a better less muggley hide nearby) the shortest route might be a bit squishy in winter; Wander beyond the cache to check out the beach & views! A couple hundred meters south is an easy formed track to the beach and a bench to sit & watch.(near the original hide spot) a photo &/or a surf report for the day would be much appreciated :)

Power Station? or Paua Station? Powerstation surf!

With the right conditions "Power Station" is a popular surf break, named after the adjacent Marsden B power station. I wonder how many tax dollars have gone into it and the neighbouring NIWA research/aquaculture lab next door, over the years? And how much power, and paua have actually been produced? Will have to do some research and update this page! :)

Finally Googled a bit about the "Paua Station" ...
NIWA’s Bream Bay Aquaculture Park is New Zealand’s largest facility for marine aquaculture research and development. The facility has been operational since April 2002 and was established to focus on several new species. It undertakes a wide range of research and consultancy services for various clients.
There are 23 full-time aquaculture staff on site and 2 hydrology technicians. Oceanz Blue Paua Ltd is also based at the Park and is New Zealand’s largest paua farm. Sealord Shellfish Ltd is also on site, producing mussel spat, which is then sent to grow-out farms on the South Island of New Zealand.

Still a bit confused about the "Power Station(s)"... They were built in the Muldoon "Think Big" era, but were "mothballed" due to the oil crunch/crisis. Mighty River Power Company aqcuired them during the electricity reforms in 1999 and recommisioned a machine in 2005 at Marsden-A to provide voltage support at peak times. Attempts to commission Marsden-B as a coal fired plant were quashed by local protest & economics. It was reported to be sold in March 2009, with details yet to be released (but rumoured to be buyers from India)
Update* September 2011 : Marsden B power station has been sold to India and is in the process of being dismantled for relocation
