Cerro Gordo is a well preserved, privately owned Ghost Town in the Inyo Mts. north east of Owens Dry Lake. Cerro Gordo road is a county maintained dirt road, steep but suitable for passenger cars. It can also be reached via the Swansea to Cerro Gordo 4WD trail or from the Saline Valley via a well maintained road. Cache placed by JustRuns 4 Wheel Drive Club. www.justruns.com
Cerro Gordo is probably the best preserved, privately owned, Ghost town in California. It is seldom visited. The Care Taker, Robert, will give tours for a small donation. It is best to call to make an appointment. 760/876-5030
The previous owner , Mike, who as very knowledgable about the history of the area, passed away 2 weeks after the cache was placed. Now the tours are offered by volunteers who are temporarily taking care of the town. The tour is well worth the time and cost. The Ghost town is on private property adjacent to the Inyo National Forest and BLM land. The cache was placed with permission of the deceased owner, Mike who died a couple of weeks after the cache was placed. Mike was a great guy and very knowledgable about the area, mining and history.
Ask the care taker for directions to the Salt Tram ruins . Well preserved mining tram structures about 7 miles from the Ghost Town via a moderately challenging 4x4 trail. Do not attempt to go to the Salt Tram unless you have a well equipped 4x4 and preferably with a group.
The views are SPECTACULAR and the area has a lot of history.
