Tufos

Tufts
Some rock formations are characterized by being easily
disaggregated due to its low density and consistency of its
constituents. These are the major characteristics of the tufts
which may be volcanic or limestone as the one presented on the
geology discussed here.
The limestone tuff that can be observed at the given coordinates,
is a rock formed from sediments existing in the sweet water that
passed very slowly through the limestone rocks drawing calcium
carbonate, a process called percolation, being then deposited and
incorporated with other materials such as plants and shells over
time.

gelo.
O máximo glaciar ocorreu há 18 000 anos e nessa altura a frente
polar atingia o norte de Portugal. As principais serras do país,
inferiores a 4ºC, dificultando a sedimentação quimiogénica e
favorecendo a sedimentação detrítica. Globalmente o nível médio das
águas do mar desceu, levando os rios a rejuvenescerem e a
aprofundarem os seus vales. A erosão fluvio-glaciar, a fusão
levantadas e constituem terraços marinhos, embora a maioria esteja

Formation
Environment
In the Quaternary, when the Earth has a very similar continental
shape of the present, our planet goes through periods of
glaciations and meltdowns reaching on point that the polar caps
reach the regions near the tropics; these is what is commonly
called by ice ages.
The maximum occurred 18 000 years ago and then the polar front
reached the north of Portugal. The main mountains of the country,
Estrela e Gerês among others, were covered with thick ice mantles
and the water temperature reaching up to below 4°C, making it
difficult the quimiogenical sedimentation favoring the detrital
sedimentation. Globally, the average sea level fell, causing rivers
to be rejuvenate and deepen their valleys. The erosion
river-glacial, the summer melting of ice and spring rainfall
combine to provide a high flow of these rivers, which therefore had
sufficient power to carry heavy loads of sedimentary pebbles, which
were deposited with intercalated sands and clays. In its margins
are formed river beaches, ours today’s river terraces, and on
the coast beaches are formed, some are now raised marine terraces,
although the majority was submerged due to a sea level much more
lower than that present that in Portugal reached around 120 to 140
meters below the current level.
In fact about 10,000 years to meltdowns was significantly increased
and with it also began to rise of sea level. The springs of some
streams, as in Ribeira da Asseca, tufts are formed from the fixing
of calcium carbonate with organisms living in water with limestone
springs.

Pego do
Inferno
observação, identificação e interpretação, podemos reconstituir a
A precipitação

Pego do
Inferno
This was the scenario on the formation of Pego do Inferno of the
Ribeira da Asseca. Over the Asseca valley you can find different
types of sedimentary rocks that allow us back about 320 million
years in geologic time and that through their careful observation,
identification and interpretation, we can reconstruct the
geological history of this area.
The course of the Asseca stream has an orientation of W-E. Over his
bed there are several waterfalls carved on limestone tufts, like
the Pego do Inferno and Pego das Torres. These limestone tufts
originated, probably 11 thousand years ago and together with the
floods (gravel, sand and clay deposited along the bed of the river)
are the most recent sediments that can be observed. The lime groves
resulted in precipitation of calcium carbonate, the main
constituent of limestone from the water stream at a time when the
climate of the Algarve was very different from today. This would be
more humid than at present. The continuous formation of limestone
tufts in fixed locations of the Asseca river build natural dams
that are the today’s cascades. Currently, there is no
significant precipitation of limestone tufts along the river, being
the existing ones destroyed by the erosive action of the waters of
the stream.
