A traditional cache hidden on a hill overlooking the village of
Fanja.
Fanja used to be an important transit place for caravans travelling
along the Sumail Gap between the Capital Area and the Interior. The
village boasts a rich cultural and archaeological heritage, but is
nowadays often bypassed as one speeds along the highway from Muscat
to Nizwa. More information can be found on the village's website:
http://fanja.net/index.html
The cache is a regular lock-and-lock container camouflaged by a
grey sock. It is hidden on the top of a hill providing great views
of the village and the imposing wadi along which it is built. The
ascent of the hill is not too difficult and one could thus start
from wadi level. However, for the more ambulatory-challenged
cachers among us it is possible to drive to the top along a dirt
track; it is recommended though to only try this using a 4WD
vehicle. As always, when handling rocks in this desert environment
be aware that they are a favourite shelter from the scorching sun
for scorpions and snakes .
