Geocache Description:

The McLachlan Memorial sits proudly at the head of the Cornwallis Peninsula.

It records the arrival of the ship “Brilliant” into the Manakau Harbour in October 1841 and gives silent testimony to the hardship of the early settlers.

In 1934 the memorial was struck by lightning, which split the upper part of the monument in two. You will now notice a lightning conductor attached to the memorial.

Access to the cache site is from the end of Cornwallis Rd, and follows a well graded clay track. This track can be extremely slippery when wet, and gets very muddy in winter. Please wear appropriate foot ware.

The cache is a short distance beyond the memorial.

The view takes in Cornwallis Beach across to Auckland City, and south over the Awhitu Peninsula.
