Geocache Description:

Rock Island View 2

This replaces my previous cache, Rock Island View. This had to be archived due to cliff erosion. The new cache is on higher ground hence the views are even better!

This is an easy to find cache located on the South West Coastal Path east of Sidmouth on Salcombe Hill. It’s a clip lock container under an old bench. Rest awhile and enjoy the views. About 4 miles west you can see the Ladram Bay Sea Stacks, which are the subject of an interesting Earth Cache.

The hill commands a wonderful view of Sidmouth.

The two rock island just off shore are not natural but put in place in 1995 as part of a major sea defence programme for Sidmouth. This was required because in the 1980’s the beach was washed away by storms and endangered the whole esplanade.
The pebble beach you see was also imported.

Sidmouth is a charming regency town.

Here’s a quote from John Betjeman writing about Sidmouth

Mansions for admirals by the pebbly strand,
And cottages for maiden aunts, inland,
That go with tea and strawberries and cream,
Sweet sheltered gardens by the twisting stream,
Cob, thatch and fuchsia bells, a Devon dream.
- John Betjeman

The cache is a small container with just a log, pencil Geo badge and £1.00 FTF prize.
