Geocache Description:

Located at the site of Nell's Cabin in the 1994 movie "Nell" The cabin no longer exists. After the movie the land was given to the forest service. They choose to not do anything with it. It seems, but I do not know for sure, that the cabin became covered in graffiti and not a pleasant sight. I was told that three years ago the forest service decided to tear it down and burn it, but I have also heard that it was hulled out in pieces and still exist somewhere. All that remains is a flat area and some stonework (which were part of the porch supports).

If you have seen the movie "Nell" you know where I am taking you. If you have not, imagine a 20 by 20 foot cabin where a lady who was a rape victim gave birth to twins, one who died, and raised the children in isolation until she died from a stroke. The setting of the movie is one of the most serene areas I have seen. However today it is an overgrown bank of the lake filled with driftwood and trees. When the water is low expect to see the water about 50 yards away, but when the lake is full it will be pretty close the cabin site.

From the place you park to cache and back you will hike about 4 miles on a dirt path that is flat and very easily navigated. You can walk, run, ride a mountain bike, or possibly ride a horse on this path, but don't expect to be able to drive on it. You could take a boat to the location as well from Fontana Lake. Take a picnic and eat at one of the clearings or at the actual cabin ruins.

Park at the given cords (N 35 25.789' W083 41.723') and hike or bike the old dirt road bed that is marked by the forest service gate at the waypoint provided (N 35 25.760 W083 41.737). You will hike this path for about 2 miles to the site of the old cabin about halfway through the trek you will come to a clear junction at the waypoint provided (N 35 25.665' W083 42.208'). At this junction you will need to take the path to the right. Along your walk you will find several other interesting clearings that were probably used for equipment storage, helicopter pad, and trailer storage. I have included pictures of some of these areas. Finally at the location you will be able to see what is left of the cabin at N 35 26.207' W083 42.168' (also included in the cache download)

I have included pictures from our journey while placing the cache and a picture of what the cabin and surrounding land looked like in the movie.
