Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the summit of Big Baldy Mountain, the highest peak in the Little Belt Mountains. The cache elevation is appx 9180 feet and you will treated to a breath-taking 360 degree view of the Little Belts, the Snowy Mountains, The Judith Mountains, The Highwoods, Judith Gap, and The Judith Basin.

You can get to the summit by foot, horse, snowmobile or dirtbike. Cars and ATV's are not allowed on the final ascent of 1100' over 1.5 mile.

There are many ways to approach this cache depending on your mode of transportation and your desire for adventure. I strongly recommend that you get a Lewis and Clark Nat'l Forest map before attempting to navigate the region's labyrinth of trails and vehicle restriction zones. Big Baldy can be accessed by multiple trails from almost every direction if you are a hiker, horse rider, or dirtbiker. I will leave these alternative routes to the creativity of the adventurous and detail only the automotive accessible route.

The following is the only route for a truck or SUV to get close to the summit. The parking area is 1100' feet and 1.5 miles from the summit. You absolutely must have a 4WD truck or SUV capable of navigating 14 miles of rocky, rutted, mudhole infested, often steep forest roads. My stock Suburban did just fine, a Suburu probably would have lost undercarriage parts. The forest roads have excellent signage and are clearly marked.

Take State Hiway 89 to King's Hill. Turn East on FR 487 and go up steep, rutted hill. Turn Left onto FR 251 and go appx 9 miles. Turn Left on FR 3300 go appx 4 miles to until the road ends at well-marked trailhead. The trail on the mountain is marked with numerous cairns.

The Forest Service maintains a logbook on the summit that is not to be confused with the cache. After you find the cache, take a moment to peruse the muggle log in the Forest Service box.
