This cache is placed near the Historic State Route 75 Tunnel in Ironton, Ohio.
In 1886, Dr. B.F. Cory started construction of this tunnel.
In 1915, the tunnel was enlarged by the Mahle Brothers. There is a Large stone with the name Mahle enscribed on it beside the road that leads to the tunnel.
The tunnel was closed in 1960 due to the relocation of state route 93.
The tunnel reopened in 1998 as an Ironton tourist attraction.
The tunnel is now used annually as the Haunted Tunnel during Halloween season.
In order to reach this cache, one might park near the entrance to the tunnel and walk up the boardwalk. There is a second place to park at the top of the hill, but it is not advised because the road is very, very steep and very, very narrow. Once you have reached the summit, take time to check out the view. This is one of the best views around. You can see about a 270 degree view of Ironton and Hanging Rock... and Mcdonald's and Taco Bell. There is a binocular stand of some sort up there ( like you would see in NYC). I do not know if it works for sure. I would recommend bringing your own binoculars.
The container is a camo coffee thermos. Please do not climb on the wooder railings. There are several pieces of wooden railing that have been mutilated in the area. The cache is easily accessible without prying on the boards or railing in any way. Enjoy the view!
