Zig Zags Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Seawind: This is the hardest it's ever been for me to archive a cache, given its legendary status and perhaps the most incredible location on the North Coast.

But...three major changes over recent months. First, several additional and very serious "No Trespassing" signs and a new gate have been added to the "private drive" approach. The folks who live in there definitely don't want visitors! I suspect their annual property tax is about equal to the yearly salaries of everyone reading this combined.

Second, the forest approach to the rope descent is totally overgrown now, and there is virtually no trail left.

And third, the steep dirt/rock slope down the ropeway to the cache site is now heavily eroded, loose and much more treacherous than ever.

I did brave all these elements today and removed the cache, but it's not even remotely advisable to invite others to do so.

I hope previous finders will share my great memories of this cache.

Geocache Description:

To get to this location from Highway 101, turn onto Falcon Cove Road. Take the first left onto Elk Flat Road. Follow the road until you get to a gate. Open the gate if traveling by car and keep driving until you reach a dead end. There is plenty of parking and space to turn the car.

Update 8-9-2014: Three "No Trespassing" signs have been posted along the road. I spoke with two of the homeowners today who were extremely friendly. The signs were erected due to problems with long-term camping in the area. They are fine with geocachers coming to visit, and have spoken with a few. Please respect the area and there should be no problem.

Find a trail through the forest until reaching a lookout point. From there a source to descend should reveal itself. The road there is quite bumpy so be careful. Small children and/or unfit people should not attempt to find this cache. Have fun and be careful!

Update 10-30-2009 by Seawind: I attempted to find this cache twice, without success. After communicating with the owner, we decided it had most likely been washed away by high waves.

I decided to adopt the cache, and moved it to higher ground. It is now about 75 feet above sea level. Also, it is no longer necessary to make the trickiest part of the descent to reach the cache.

This remains a potentially dangerous location, however, so please use extreme caution and only attempt it if you feel confident in your ability.

The cache is now a green plastic match tube. Enjoy this wonderful location!

Note: I found it very pleasant to park at a turnout not far after turning onto Elk Flat Road and then walk the remainder of the distance.
